Netherlands: PhD student in Phytoplankton Ecology at the University of Amsterdam

Overview

The FORCE project aims to understand the ultimate and proximate causes of change in Caribbean coral reef ecosystems. Eutrophication through runoff of terrestrial nutrients into coastal waters may cause a shift from coral dominance to macroalgae. However, the role of phytoplankton in absorbing nutrients has largely been under-appreciated. Phytoplankton often responds rapidly to changes in nutrient availability and may utilise much of the terrestrial nutrients, rendering them unavailable to corals and macroalgae. To date, nutrient thresholds indicating problematic levels of eutrophication of coral reefs have been proposed, but their relevance is questionable. Our study will investigate how the nutrient influx is allocated over phytoplankton, macroalgae and corals to obtain a better understanding of the impacts of eutrophication on coral reefs.

Fieldwork will consist of water sampling, chemical and biological analyses, underwater surveys, and aquarium experiments. The fieldwork (18-24 months) will be primarily conducted at the Carmabi Ecological Institute on Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, and at some other Caribbean locations. Preparation for field work, laboratory and statistical analyses, and writing of manuscripts will be done at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Requirements

The successful candidate has:

- an MSc in marine biology, aquatic ecology, or related biological field;
- experience with fieldwork;
- experience in (scientific) teamwork;
- proven writing ability in English;
- preference will be given to applicants who have experience with the ecology of phytoplankton, or macroalgae, or coral reefs;
- a valid driver's license and open water SCUBA certificate.

Further information

More information can be obtained from: Dr. Petra Visser, +31 20 525 7073, P.M.Visser@uva.nl, Aquatic Microbiology, UvA.

Appointment

The appointment starting a.s.a.p. will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of four years (12 months plus a further 36 months after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. PhD students are also expected to assist in teaching undergraduates. The salary is in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) and will range from €2,042 (first year) up to a maximum of €2,612 (last year) gross per month (scale P). The annual salary will be increased with 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

How to apply

USA: Graduate Fellowships at The Yeshiva University Center for Jewish Law and Contemporary Civilization at Cardozo Law School (CJL)

Overview

The Yeshiva University Center for Jewish Law and Contemporary Civilization at Cardozo Law School (CJL) is pleased to accept applications for its 2010-2012 Graduate Fellowship, a two-year forum for the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between Legal Academia and Judaic Studies. Eight fellowships will be awarded, each consisting of $10,000 to be distributed over the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 academic years.

The CJL Graduate Fellowship aims to bring legal theory into the disciplines of Jewish history and Jewish law. In the general academy, a new methodological connection has been forged over the last few decades between the disciplines of history and law, largely through the importation of legal theory into the study of history and comparative law. Legal history has raised the level of academic discourse both for historians and legal theorists, pushing both to consider important factors once outside their respective disciplines. This interdisciplinary sophistication, already mainstream in other fields of study, will play an important role in the future of Jewish Studies.

The Graduate Fellowship fosters a community of impressive and accomplished PhD candidates in various disciplines of Jewish Studies. Each fellow offers a unique perspective and provides a distinctive contribution to the nascent field of Jewish Law and Legal Theory. In addition to working closely with other fellows and gaining literacy in legal theory and its application to the study of Jewish texts, fellows interact regularly with prominent scholars, both in Judaic Studies and Legal Theory, and participate in the CJL’s growing community of interdisciplinary discourse.

The core of the Graduate Fellowship is an 11-session seminar led by CJL faculty and visiting scholars. The seminar is carefully designed to introduce students to the essential questions and problems of legal theory that are relevant and interesting to an examination of Jewish texts and Jewish history. In the first year, we focus on the methodological questions that are raised by bringing together the fields of Jewish Studies and legal theory. Each mini-unit on legal theory is followed by a session on integration of Jewish Studies and legal theory, led by a prominent Jewish Studies scholar, four times a year. In the second year, we probe more deeply into the hermeneutics of law, and the questions of legal authority which emerge.

In addition to the seminar, second-year Graduate Fellows participate in monthly meetings of the Legal Theory Reading Group at the Cardozo School of Law in New York City and attend the CJL’s annual international graduate conference, which focuses on the intersection between Jewish law and legal theory.

For more information about CJL, please consult our website: http://www.cardozo.yu.edu/cjl/ or send inquiries to jewishlaw@yu.edu. The deadline for applications is April 9, 2010.

- Current Resume

- Letter of recommendation from a professor with whom you work closely (preferably your advisor). Letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically by the recommender to jewishlaw@yu.edu.

USA: Fellowship Opportunities from Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD)

Overview

After 9/11, numerous colleges and universities added terrorism and homeland security courses to their curricula. Many professors and graduate students who taught these courses complained of having insufficient access to the top practitioners or the latest research in the field. In response, FDD created the Academic Fellowship program for university professors entitled “Defending Democracy, Defeating Terrorism.”

The program features an intensive, 10-day course on terrorism and the threat it poses to democratic societies. Using Israel as a case study, professors are given access to top researchers and officials who provide cutting-edge information about the terrorist threats to democracies worldwide. The goal of the program is to offer information to teaching professionals about the latest trends in terrorists' ideologies, motives, and operations, and how democracies can fight them.

The course of study occurs both in the classroom at Tel Aviv University and in the field with lectures by academics, diplomats, military and intelligence officials, and politicians from Israel, Jordan, India, Turkey and the United States. It also features visits to military bases, border zones and other security installations to learn the practical side of deterring terrorist attacks.

This year the program runs May 29th - June 9th (travel inclusive). All expenses are paid by FDD.

Eligible professors must:

• Have a full-time affiliation with a U.S. or Canadian university;
• Serve in a teaching capacity, preferably in the fields of international affairs, history, political science or criminal justice;
• Have an ongoing involvement in student activities.

Accepted professors must be willing to:

• Fully participate in the 10-day program in Tel Aviv; and
• Assist in the recruitment of future candidates for the Academic Fellowship Program.
