USA: Frank Knox Fellowships 2011/12 for British Citizens, Harvard University

Overview

All information and closing dates are subject to confirmation from the Frank Knox Memorial in August each year. The following information should be used as a guideline only.

Frank Knox Fellowships

These Fellowships are provided by Mrs Annie Reid Knox for the Frank Knox Memorial, and are to enable students from the UK to study at Harvard University.

Amount Awarded

Each Fellowship is at least $23,000 plus tuition and a health insurance fee per annum. Travel is not included, but in cases of severe hardship applications can be made to Harvard for financial assistance towards travel costs.

Recipients admitted to a degree programme requiring multiple years of study are guaranteed two years of funding provided they remain in good academic standing. Recipients admitted to a one year degree programme, or as a Special Student or Visiting Fellow, will be guaranteed funding for one year.

Frank Knox Fellowships are not granted for postdoctoral study at Harvard.

Applying for admission

Candidates must, at the same time as applying for a Frank Knox Fellowship, make a separate application for admission direct to the Graduate School of their choice at Harvard University. Admission to a school is a prior condition of the the award of a Knox Fellowship. Information about admission can be found on the Harvard University web pages


Eligible Candidates

Candidates must be British citizens at the time of application (British passport holder), and ordinarily resident in the UK.

Applications cannot be accepted from those already in the USA.

Candidates will need to have spent at least two of the last four years studying at a UK university.

Candidates must (a) already be graduates of a UK university (those who graduated before 2009 will not be eligible), or (b) currently be studying for a first or higher degree (applicants who are currently studying for a first degree must be due to graduate at the end of the 2010/11 academic year).

Selected candidates will be invited to London for an interview in January 2011

How to apply

Application forms can be collected from the Financial Support Office from August 2010. You an request an application form at our Drop In session or by emailing financial-support@lse.ac.uk for an application form to be posted. The forms can also be downloaded from the Frank Knox Fellowship website from August 2010.
Candidates will need to submit one original application form with a passport photo, and seven photocopies. The application forms must be submitted to the Financial Support Office by Monday 18 October 2010.

If you would like help and advice completing the scholarship application form, contact the Careers Service to arrange an appointment with a careers adviser.

Candidates must also submit a short essay of not more than 1,000 words giving an account of their academic pursuits, general activities, intellectual interests, reasons for wishing to study in the US and for the choice of course and institution and plans for the future. Special regard will be given to personal qualities.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of future promise of leadership. Strength of character, keen mind, a balanced judgement and devotion to the democratic ideal will be qualities borne in mind in making the final selection.

Candidates will be asked to attend an interview in order for the School to provide a letter of support to be submitted with the scholarship application. It is likely that the interview will be held in the week commencing 25 October 2010.

References

Two references need to be submitted.

The first reference should be from the candidate's LSE tutor and should be submitted with the scholarship application form.

The second reference can be from another tutor at LSE, or from another institution and should comment on the applicant's academic ability. The second reference must be sent by the referee direct to:
