USA: For Jamaica - 2011/2012 Fulbright Graduate Student Program

Overview

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy invites applications from qualified graduates of local universities for the 2011/2012 Fulbright Graduate Student Program. Successful applicants will receive full funding to study for Master’s or Doctoral degrees at universities in the United States.

Scholarships for this program are awarded to students with first-class honors, upper second-class honors, or lower second-class honors Bachelor's degrees in the humanities, social sciences and engineering who wish to continue their studies in the United States. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State, and is administered by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy.

The embassy advises that persons with "green cards" (alien registration cards) or persons already pursuing studies at a U.S. university, or who are living in the U.S., are NOT eligible to apply for these awards. Recipients should plan to return to Jamaica on completion of their studies and must spend at least two years in Jamaica before becoming eligible for consideration to immigrate to the U.S.

Application

Application forms for the Fulbright Program are available from the embassy’s Public Affairs Section, or from Ms. Cheryl Brown, Manager, Office of the Principal, University of the West Indies; Ms. Garcia Imoru, Financial Aid Officer, University of Technology, and Dr. Beverly Cameron, Vice President, Academic Administration, Northern Caribbean University.

How to pply

The completed applications must be submitted to Mrs. Angella Harvey, the embassy's Cultural Affairs Specialist, 142 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, no later than Friday, May 28, 2010. Final interviews of pre-screened candidates will take place in the embassy on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Questions regarding any aspect of the Fulbright Program may be addressed to Mrs. Harvey by telephone at 702-6113 or 383-0753, or by e-mail at harveyae@state.gov, or to Mrs. Bernadette Hutchinson, Cultural Affairs Assistant, at 702-6209, e-mail at hutchinsonbg@state.gov


Applicants will be required to take the next sitting of the paper-based Graduate Record Examination (GRE) on February 6, 2010 (registration deadline/receipt date at the Educational Testing Service [ETS] in Princeton, New Jersey: December 28, 2009).

Detailed information about the GRE can be obtained at www.gre.org. To schedule an appointment for the paper-based Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), one may do so on-line at www.mba.com; by calling 1-800-GMAT-NOW 1-800-GMAT-NOW ; or by completing the International Test Scheduling Form in the GMAT bulletin, if paying with a U.S. credit card.

Applicants must submit their GRE or GMAT scores along with their applications. GRE and GMAT bulletins will soon be available from the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section, 142 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6. Additional information about these tests can be obtained from the embassy’s Information Resource Center at 702-6172 or 702-6163.
