All information and closing dates are subject to confirmation from Kennedy Trust in August each year. The following information should be used as a guideline only.
In 1965 the Kennedy Memorial Trust set up a fund to enable UK graduates to study in the United States.
Boston was President Kennedy's home and he attended Harvard University. Therefore the Kennedy Memorial Trust is offering up to ten scholarships for postgraduate study or research in the USA at Harvard University or Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The scholarships are tenable for one year and will next be awarded for the 2011/12 academic session. In certain circumstances, students applying for a two year masters programme or a PhD may be considered for extra funding to help support a second year of study.
Amount Awarded
Each scholarship covers air fares to and from the US, tuition fees, plus a stipend of $22,000 for living costs.
Applying for admission
Candidates must, at the same time as applying for a Kennedy Scholarship, make a separate application for admission direct to Harvard or MIT. Information about admission can be found on the Harvard University and MIT web pages.
Candidates wishing to study as Non-degree students at the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard or as Special Students on the Technology and Policy Programme at MIT will gain automatic admission upon their subsequent application to these programmes.
Candidates intending to apply for admission to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, are advised to contact Annie Thomas at the Kennedy Trust Office on 020 7222 1151 for guidance.

Eligible Candidates
Candidates must be British citizens at the time of application (British passport holder), and ordinarily resident in the UK.
Applications cannot be accepted from those already in the US.
Candidates will need to have been educated in the UK from at least the age of 16 up to completion of a first degree and have spent two of the last five years studying at a UK university.
Candidates must (a) already be graduates of a UK university (those who graduated before 2008 will not be eligible), or (b) currently be studying for a first or higher degree (applicants who are studying for a first degree must be due to graduate at the end of the 2010/11 academic year).
Selected candidates will be invited to London for an interview with the Kennedy Memorial Trust in January 2011.
How to apply
Application forms can be collected from the Financial Support Office from August 2010. You an request an application form at our Drop In session, or by emailing financial-support@lse.ac.uk for an application form to be posted. The forms can also be downloaded from the Kennedy Memorial Trust from August 2010.
Applicants will need to submit one original application form with a passport photo, and six photocopies. The application forms must be submitted to the Financial Support Office by Monday 18 October 2010.
If you would like help and advice completing the scholarship application form, contact the Careers Service to arrange an appointment with a careers adviser.
Candidates must also submit a short essay of not more than 1,000 words giving an account of their academic pursuits, general activities, intellectual interests, reasons for wishing to study in the US and plans for the future. The Trust will take into account candidates' intellectual ability, readiness and ability to express themselves, wider interests and attainments, the focus and value of their proposed study and their capacity for future leadership.
Candidates will be asked to attend an interview in order for the School to provide a letter of support to be submitted with the scholarship application. It is likely that the interview will be held in the week commencing 25 October 2010.
References
Two references need to be submitted.
The first reference should be from the candidate's LSE tutor and should be submitted with the scholarship application form.
The second reference can be from another tutor either at LSE or from another institution and should comment on the candidate's performance at university. The second reference must be sent by the referee direct to:
