Overview
The American Center, U.S. Embassy, Dhaka is pleased to announce that the United States government will offer several two-year grants for a fully-funded master’s degree in the U.S. through the Fulbright Foreign Student Program starting in fall 2011. Preferred candidates include junior faculty from Bangladeshi universities and junior to mid-level employees of research organizations, think tanks, NGOs, and other related organizations. The grants will be offered for degrees in the following fields:
o History /American History
o English Literature /American Literature/ Linguistics
o Economics
o Political Science
o International Relations
o Journalism/Mass Communication
o Public Administration
o Sociology/Anthropology
o Business Administration
o Finance/Management
o Women’s Studies/Gender Studies
Fulbright grant provisions include: round-trip airfare, tuition and related academic fees, monthly stipend for room, board, and incidental expenses, book allowance, health and accident insurance, travel allowance and excess baggage allowance, and pre-academic English language training (if necessary).
To be eligible, candidates must:
Have at least a four-year bachelor’s degree, with an outstanding academic record (preferably first class); those holding Bangladeshi master’s degrees are also eligible.
-Not have degree from a U.S. university or be enrolled in a U.S. degree program.
-Not hold a master’s degree from any third country.
-Have at least two years full-time professional experience.
-Have relevant degrees or professional experience in their proposed field of study.
-Be between 24 – 30 years old.
-Be fluent in English.
-Be in good health.
-Be Bangladeshi citizens residing in Bangladesh at the time of application.
-Agree to return to Bangladesh on completion of studies in the U.S.
-Be willing to refund the cost of the return ticket if they return home before completion of the degree.
How to apply
Applicants are requested to submit the online application by Thursday, May 20, 2010. Detailed instructions on how to fill out the online application form and the link to the online application site are available at http://dhaka.usembassy.gov/educational_cultural_exchanges.html. Candidates may access the online application directly at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international/.
Prospective candidates must also submit official academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution (for bachelors and masters), attested copies of certificates, and other supplemental forms (including three Letters of Reference, the Academic Records Information Form, and the Signature form) at the American Center, House No. 110, Road No. 27, Banani – Dhaka 1213 by the same deadline. Supplemental forms are available at the above-mentioned link. After review of applications, only short-listed candidates will be called for an interview.
All candidates will need to take the TOEFL and GRE tests by September 15, 2010. Prospective candidates must prepare well in advance to sit for both tests by this date. Having competitive scores will be essential in university placement.
Previously, Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program participants were not eligible to apply to the Fulbright Foreign Student program. However, the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) is this year allowing FLTA grantees to be eligible for a traditional Fulbright student grant. Alumni of the Fulbright FLTA Program are now eligible to apply for a traditional Fulbright Foreign Student grant, with a minimum two-year gap between the end date of their Fulbright FLTA grant and the start date of their traditional Fulbright Foreign Student grant.
We also wanted to alert prospective applicants about an issue that can have a serious impact on the competitiveness of their applications. Regretfully, we have recently seen applicants copying application essays from previous years’ successful Fulbright candidates and from the internet. Plagiarism is a very serious offense, and an application will NOT be considered if any portion of any of the essays is copied.
