USA: Fellows from Bangladesh - Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant Program, 2011

Overview

The American Center of the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka is pleased to announce the competition for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program for 2011-2012. The primary focus of the FLTA program is to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities and some high schools while providing teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States.

Duty and responsibility

FLTA fellows from Bangladesh will predominantly teach Bangla language classes to American students. The fellows and the students will have a unique opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures and customs and to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and Bangladesh. Fellows may teach up to two classes per semester and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. studies. The remaining course work must relate to their careers in English language teaching. They will also interact with the host community in conversation groups, extracurricular activities and community outreach projects. It is a nine-month, non-degree program that is non-renewable in nature. All FLTA fellows will receive a monthly stipend, accident and sickness insurance coverage, and travel support. U.S. host institutions will provide tuition waivers to support the required coursework.

Eligible Candidates

Interested candidates must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English either at the secondary (ninth to twelve grade teachers) or university level. They should possess a master’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in English by August of 2009. Applicants must be between 23-29 years of age and have fluency in English. They should be residing in their home country throughout the nomination and selection process. The fellows are required to return to their home country upon completion of the nine-month program. Please note that family members are not allowed to accompany fellows during this program.

How to apply

An on-line application for the FLTA program is available at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/flta/. The deadline for submitting an on-line application is Thursday, July 15, 2010. All prospective candidates will need to take the TOEFL or the IELTS tests in advance. In order to qualify, applicants will need to have a minimum score of 92-93 IBT, or 7.0 IELTS. Applicants must submit a copy of their score with the application.

In addition to the on-line application and the TOEFL/IELTS score, candidates will also need to submit the following supplemental documents to the American Center (House No. 110, Road No 27, Banani, Dhaka –1213) by Thursday, July 15.

These documents include:

1. Three letters of reference
2. Academic transcripts (official) for both Bachelors and Masters
3. Attested copies of certificates
4. Personal Information Form (available on-line)

After the preliminary review, selected candidates will be called in to sit for a spoken and written test in Bangla. Short-listed candidates will be called for an interview, and final nominations will be made based upon the interview. Candidates will be notified of their status by March of 2011.

The FLTA program will begin in August of 2011. Selected FLTA fellows will be required to attend an orientation during the summer before arriving at their host institution. They will also need to attend a mid-year enrichment workshop in the U.S. to share and discuss foreign language teaching best practices and their current teaching experiences with other FLTA fellows.

There has been a significant change in the FLTA program policy beginning this year. Previously, FLTA program participants were not eligible to apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student program. However, the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) is allowing FLTA grantees to be eligible for a traditional Fulbright student grant starting this year. Alumni of the Fulbright FLTA Program are now eligible to apply for a traditional Fulbright Foreign Student grant, with a minimum two-year gap between the end date of their Fulbright FLTA grant and the start date of their traditional Fulbright Foreign Student grant.
