USA: Cyprus America Scholarship Program Grant Competition for Bachelor's Degree

Overview

The Cyprus-America Scholarship Program was established in 1981 under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Cyprus and the Government of the United States. This program is funded by the people of the United States of America through the U.S. Embassy and the Office of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. The program is administered in Cyprus by the Fulbright Commission.

The Fulbright Commission will be accepting applications between early May and July 30, 2010. The CASP competition is open for Bachelor’s degrees in all fields except Medicine and Dentistry. Grants are for study at accredited U.S. universities beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year.

CASP grants are primarily merit-based grants. An applicant’s financial need, although important for evaluation, is of secondary consideration in the selection process.

CASP scholarship grantees will be awarded a maximum amount of $25,000 per year for four years if warranted by university studies (a maximum total of $100,000).

Scholarship grantees are expected to apply for financial assistance directly from the U.S. institutions, in addition to receiving the CASP Scholarship.

If the U.S. institution grants the applicant an award, this assistance could be in the form of a scholarship, direct grant, loans and/or work-study programs. The amount of the assistance will vary and will be determined entirely by the awarding institution; they are usually renewable depending on the availability of university funds and satisfactory academic performance. Students who do not receive financial assistance from the university will not be penalized.

Applicants who choose to attend a university whose expenses exceed the amount of their award plus any financial assistance from the university must supplement the exceeding amount from their own funds.

Travel costs are not included in the grants.

Applications will be available from the Commission’s website www.fulbright.org.cy . Completed applications must be returned to the Fulbright Commission no later than 2:00 pm, Friday, July 30, 2010. Applications must be typed. All completed applications must be delivered in person by the applicant or his/her representative to a counselor at the Fulbright Commission who will review the application for complete documents. All applicants must be present in Cyprus for an interview in September 2010.
