Overview
The School of Law at the University of Essex has an established reputation for the highest quality teaching and research. The School has developed many successful cutting edge degrees involving studies of different legal cultures and systems and is well known for its European and international dimensions.
Applications are now invited for PhD studies in the field of Comparative Law (with a focus on comparative public law). The research will focus on the study of the global legal environment from a comparative perspective. It is concerned not only with European law and the domestic law of member states but also with developing a critical understanding of the operation and intersection of legal cultures and systems in a global context.
Eligible Candidates
The successful candidate will have a background in law (including comparative law and/or public law) and a conceptual understanding of the legal principles of European law, the legal cultures and the main legal systems present in Europe and, if relevant to the topic of the thesis, elsewhere. Scholarships
The scholarships will cover tuition fees for up to three years and are available for students who wish to start their studies in October 2010. For general entry requirements for research degrees see our website.

In addition, applicants need to submit a covering letter outlining their financial needs, including whether other sources of funding have been explored, and how they expect to cover their living expenses.
