UK: Post Doctoral Research Associate at The University of Manchester - School of Earth, Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences

Overview

A Post Doctoral Research Associate is sought to investigate the night-time transformation of organic and inorganic acids and determine the extent to which this is driven by nitrate radical chemistry as part of the UK NERC RONOCO (Role of Night-time Chemistry in Controlling the Oxidising capacity of the Atmosphere) programme.

You will take part in a range of field campaigns, centred around the UK Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements, a BAe 146 aircraft, which is the main UK airborne research facility (http://www.faam.ac.uk), on which The University of Manchester currently operates a suite of instrumentation. These will utilised during this project and the appointee will be expected to play a key role in further developing; characterising; and using a range of instruments that include Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry.

Flying missions will include studying plumes from UK cities and emissions from the UK as a whole.

In addition to characterising and using instruments in the field activities, you will take a leading role in analysing and interpreting the data. You will be working in the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences within the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences under the direction of Dr. Carl Percival.

The Centre has over 70 staff and students and studies a wide range of atmospheric processes including clouds, aerosols, radiation, dynamics, surface fluxes and trace gas reactions.

We recently moved to a new £3M suite of laboratories and the facilities now include a large pressure and temperature controlled cold chamber for studying ice physics and the largest aerosol photochemical chamber in the UK. In addition the Centre has a wide range of laboratory test facilities for generating and measuring trace gases, and several rooftop laboratories.

The group conducts atmospheric research from a range of field research stations and from several research aircraft. You will play an active role in these interdisciplinary research activities. You should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in Physical Science, Engineering or a related discipline.

Please note a successful applicant who is yet to be awarded their PhD may be initially appointed a Research Assistant on Grade 5 until confirmation of their PhD award. You should also have an understanding of atmospheric gas phase processes; be able to test, characterise, develop and use a range of analytical instrumentation for the detection of gas phase species; and show skills in computer programming for controlling instruments and analysing large data sets.

In addition you should have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team; and demonstrate the ability to contribute to research papers in the field. The collaborative nature of the project places a strict timetable on the work programme, so having the key instruments skills is highly desirable, as is experience of working to fixed milestones and an ability to time manage.

Salary

£28,983 - £35,646 p.a. (Research Associate) Or £24,273 - £28,139 p.a. (Research Assistant)
