The Institute for Research in Applicable Computing

The Institute for Research in Applicable Computing (IRAC, www.beds.ac.uk/research/irac) is the home for research activities for the Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST) which has approximately 1,800 students and an impressive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. IRAC has an expanding research profile which is largely focused on applicable computing. The Institute has three research centres: the Centre for Research in Distributed Technologies (CREDIT), the Centre for Computer Graphics & Visualisation (CCGV) and the Centre for Wireless Network Design.

The Institute currently has approximately 30 academic staff of whom 6 are professors, 20 visiting staff, 20 Research Fellows / Assistants and 50 research students, mostly supported by external projects or awards from the student’s government. The Institute remains successful in generating research income through a wide range of funded projects from the EC, EPSRC, Leverhulme, Nuffield Foundation, the formal DTI and industry, and income from research and consultancy contracts won since 2005 is over £7 million for more than 40 projects.


The Project

Computer security and forensics has been a very important for the modern world. The University has been working closely with relevant organisations and industry such as the Metropolitan Police and Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). This project will collaborate with 7Safe, a leading information security and computer forensics consulting firm to carry out in-depth investigation into challenges in network forensics such as intrusion evidence and cyber attacks.

Eligible Candidates

The student will have a good first degree in computer science, mathematics or a science related area. A suitable postgraduate qualification and/or relevant industrial experience will be advantageous. The student is expected to join the established computer security group and work closely with relevant industrial and police organisations under the guidance of the supervisory team.
