UK: MSc Transport Planning and the Environment at University of Leeds

Overview

Institute for Transport Studies (ITS)
University of Leeds

Transport is a major cause of environmental impact. Whether it is air pollution, noise, encroachment on the green belt or climate change, it is widely accepted that further expansion of transport must be balanced against the environmental damage. This programme takes a detailed look at this relationship, and equips students with practical approaches to environmentally sound transport planning.

Students study the core principles of transport planning and then apply these to the environmental issues. Having understood the nature of the problems, students consider how mitigation can be achieved, through a range of specific interventions. The programme is suitable for students from a range of degree subjects. It will particularly appeal to those who want to learn new technical skills and apply these in a challenging and high profile sector.

Careers

The transport sector continues to need people with the right skills and training. Students progress from ITS to a range of graduate-level jobs including those in consultancy, government, transport operators, not-for-profit and international agencies. ITS facilitates this by arranging interviews for students with prospective employers.

Duration

The programme is available for full-time study (12 months) or for part-time study (flexible attendance but typically 2-3 years duration). Shorter Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programmes are also available.

Eligible Candidates

Applicants should have a good honours degree in a relevant discipline. It is not a requirement to have studied transport at undergraduate level, but applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear interest. International students are encouraged to apply, subject to competence in English language (IETLS 6.5 or equivalent).

Funding

ITS can advise on funding including the process by which candidates can be nominated by ITS for scholarship competitions. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must first hold an offer of a place on the programme.

Accreditation

The programme is recognised by the major professional bodies in the transport sector. It fulfills the educational requirements for membership of the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT UK) and the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT). It also provides a pathway towards the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification, which is comparable to Chartered Engineer status.
