UK: Imperial College London PhD Studentship in Software Abstractions for Computational Science

Overview

PhD Studentship position, with full funding for UK and EU candidates

Fixed Term for 3 years, starting October 2010

Studentship in Particle Science Language.

Particle-based methods underpin a huge range of computational science simulations, spanning, for example, molecular dynamics, discrete element modelling of sand movement, and smoothed-particle hydrodynamics for breaking waves. Our goal is to develop a unifying domain-specific language that abstracts away the complexity of managing particle interactions as they move in 3D, while enabling automatic generation of the fastest-possible implementation for the particular combination of hardware and problem instance.

Amount Awarded

Untaxed bursary of £15,200 per annum plus UK/EU fees. UK nationals are eligible. EU nationals are only eligible for the bursary if they meet the EPSRC requirement of having been in the UK for three years immediately prior to starting the PhD. Details can be found at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm

The project involves engaging with diverse applications to refine the design, and implementing a sophisticated compiler targeting a parallel cluster accelerated with GPUs. The main research goal is to develop an abstract architecture for optimisation that can be driven by a model of the target hardware. Candidates must have a Master's degree (or equivalent), a strong academic background in Computer Science, and a talent for making complex software work.

The successful candidate will join a rapidly growing cross-institutional and multidisciplinary team working to revolutionise the way that scientific computing is done. The student will develop collaborations with engineers and applications scientists at a number of UK institutions and will present their work in international journals and conferences. The position is bursary-funded from an EPSRC Project Studentship.

The studentship comes under the supervision of Professor Paul Kelly. For further details please contact Paul Kelly (p.kelly@imperial.ac.uk, http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~phjk).
