UK: EngD studentship - High rate biological processes for water treatment: developing the next generation of bio-filtration technology

Overview

Biological processes used in water treatment are considered attractive in terms of their ability to generate biologically stable waters, which are robust and remove broad spectrums of contaminants including some pesticides poorly removed in traditional physico-chemical options. Unfortunately, they tend to work at very slow rates restricting their current use. However, there is a considerable desire to intensify the currently slow biological processes in order to generate the next generation of high rate biological processes for water treatment that retain the inherent benefits of the old systems but do so at much higher rates.

This stimulating 4 year EngD programme at Cranfield University, in collaboration with Anglian Water and WRc, aims to understand the critical factors that control the development of an intensive biological process for water treatment whilst retaining the appropriate balance of attributes from current extensive systems. This leads to the key question of how fast a biological process can go without negatively influencing its performance and robustness. Thus the overall ambition of the project is to develop the next generation of biological process for use in a 21st century water treatment works.

This EngD studentship is part of the stream programme, allowing talented researchers to develop their skills and careers within an industrial environment.
