Singapore: Postdoctoral Fellowship at College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University

Overview

The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites applications for up to 15 postdoctoral fellowships, from August 2010.

The College comprises 3 Schools: Humanities and Social Sciences; Arts, Design, and Media; and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

Up to 3 postdoctoral fellowships will be available at the School of Art, Design, and Media, in the following areas:

A) Critical theories in contemporary photography, creativity studies with artists and within art
institutions, as well as knowledge and practice in innovative digital imaging research.
B) Digital media research with emphasis on strategies that bridge to traditional analogue media and material cultures, including but not limited to film, animation, and visual effects.
C) Issues related to design and its dialogue with traditional arts and cultural heritage.

Successful applicants are expected to work closely with the following three professors at the School.

Up to 9 fellowships will be available at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, in the following areas:

A) Environment and Climate Change

Research on the relationships among the environment, health and climate change in general and
more specifically repercussions of climate change on the environment and health.

B) Health and Aging

Research on health and aging issues with special emphasis on Singapore and the region.

C) Multilingual Machine Translation

Exploit differences in languages to improve machine translation quality.

D) Bilingualism and Emotion

Explore bilingual speakers' emotional lexicons and discourses.

E) Contemporary literature

Offer multiple critical frames; from the postmodern to the postcolonial, from ethical readings to the exploration of national literatures, including that of Singapore.

F) Contemporary China

Research on Comtemporary China with emphasis on urban development and health policy.

G) Applied Psychology & Cognitive Neuroscience

Focus on research in Positive Aging and Mental Health-related issues in Asian context.

H) Cultural and Religious Change in Contemporary Asia

Focus on the dynamics of cultural change and modernity pertaining to, for example, religious life,
popular culture, ethnicity, gender, state-society relations etc.

Candidates with interdisciplinary research interests are particularly encouraged to apply.

Up to 3 fellowships will be available at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, in the following areas:

A) Health Communication

This area focuses on the behavioral, social and policy issues related to health communication, in particular, the use of communication strategies to enhance health. Health communication spans all forms of disease prevention and health promotion in areas such as patient/professional communication, public health messages and campaigns, health risk communication, public health education and the improvement of public health through various media.

B) Health and Medical Informatics

This area focuses on the design, development and evaluation of advanced interactive health, healthcare and medical information systems. It covers the organization, acquisition (information extraction and text mining) and analysis management (information management and knowledge fusion/mobilization) of health-related information, such as patient records, clinical research results, biomedical research data, medical concepts, drug-related information and hospital information.

C) New Media

The research examines the use and effect of those new media which enable or facilitate social interaction and networking in a broad sense, such as social network sites and MMORPGs. A focus will be on users' perceptions, behaviors, and responses, within the mediated settings as well as in real life, in terms of dimensions including motivation, adoption, privacy, identity, risk taking, self- disclosure, socialization, and social capital.

Postdoctoral fellowships are for one year, renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance. Postdoctoral fellows may be required to assist in teaching, up to the equivalent of one semester-based course per academic year.
