Post doctoral research fellow in mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Tromsø

The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Physics and Technology, Department of Geology, Department of Computer Science, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Engineering and Safety.

The position is organized under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for appointment in the position of post doctoral research fellow. The applicant must be able to document scientific knowledge in the areas of differential geometry and partial differential equations. The project is related to study of dynamics of evolutionary partial differential equations and their discrete analogs. We therefore give priority to experts in the fields of geometry of nonlinear differential equations, finite-dimensional dynamics of evolutionary equations, homological methods in investigation of geometric structures, and the equations of mathematical physics.

Required teaching qualifications

Further, applicants must be able to document teaching qualifications in the form of university-level teaching seminars, other teaching education or through having collected a teaching portfolio. The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole. The working time will be set aside for research, research-related activities and research administration. For appointment for a period exceeding two years the employee may be instructed teaching or equivalent work for the University of Tromsø. The employer will decide on the amount of potential teaching/equivalent work. Appointment for more than one fixed term period at the same institution is not permitted. Regulations concerning redundancy pay cannot be included in the fixed term work contract.

Remuneration for the position of post doctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2% will be made to the State Pension Fund.

The main objective of appointments to positions of post doctoral research fellows is to qualify the appointee for employment in scientific top positions. Applications must be accompanied by a proposal for the qualifying work and shall include a work schedule. Appointments are made on the understanding that the appointee shall complete his/her project within the contract term.


Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis will be placed on assessment of the submitted scientific works and the proposal for the qualifying work.

For appointment which instructs the employee teaching or equivalent work for the University of Tromsø emphasis will also be placed on pedagogical qualifications, experience from popularization/publication, administration and work related to disciplinary development.

THE SCIENTIFIC WORK – published or unpublished up to 10 items – which the applicant wishes to be taken into consideration during the evaluation process must be submitted in 3 copies arranged as three complete sets. The Doctoral Degree dissertation is regarded as one work. The scientific work is to be sent to the above-mentioned address by the deadline for applications.
