Norway: PhD Research Fellow in Petroleum Geology at The University of Oslo

Overview

The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (including oceans, freshwater and glaciers), the earth's surface and its interior. The span of the work at the Department is well illustrated by the research sections: Meteorology and Oceanography, Environmental Geology, Hydrology and Geohazards, Physical Geography Petroleum Geology and Geophysics Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry. The faculty consists of 45 professors and lecturers from 5 different sections. In addition, there are Postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, technical staff and administrative personnel. For more information, see (http://www.geo.uio.no).

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date as soon as possible and no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description:

The position is affiliated with the Section for Petroleum Geology and Geophysics. The candidate will work within the Norwegian Research Council funded Center for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) SUCCESS - a state-of-the-art research centre and provider of innovative solutions for CO2 storage. The center goal is to develop and provide a sound scientific base for CO2 injection, storage and monitoring. The candidate will work within WP1 and WP3 (see http://www.fme-success.no) where geochemical and geomechanical response to CO2 injection will be studied, and we are looking for candidates with a suitable background in these areas. CO2 injection is followed by a pressure increase and potential fracturing. Current empirical engineering practice should be improved, by geomechanical modeling, to arrive at sound adaptive injection strategies to have safe pressure buildup. Potential focus areas are:

- Relation between flow, reactions and geomechanical response
- Integrity and retention capacity of sealing materials
- Improved rock physics models.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
