New Zealand: University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarships for New Zealand citizens

Overview

Candidates for the award must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit with a minimum grade of A- required for eligibility.

Full-time candidates for the following doctoral degrees may apply for a University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Education (EdD) Part 2 only, Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) Part 2 only, and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), Part 2 only.

Students already enrolled in a doctoral degree at the University of Waikato may apply, however the Scholarships Committee is likely to favour applications from new students, i.e. those about to start, or still in the first year of, doctoral enrolment. In exceptional circumstances, the Committee may offer a Scholarship (of reduced duration) to a candidate who has been enrolled in doctoral studies for more than a year.

Number of awards

Up to 35 scholarships each year

Value

For 2010, the total value of the Scholarships offered shall be a living allowance of $22,000.00 per annum, payable in monthly instalments of $1,833.33, an amount equal to the annual tuition fees payable during the term of the Scholarship and a thesis preparation allowance of up to $400, provided the thesis is submitted within four years of first registration for the degree.

How to apply

Application form and Regulations can be downloaded from our website details given below.

Conditions of acceptance

Termination of or withdrawal from a doctoral programme for which a scholarship has been awarded shall result in termination of the scholarship.

The University expects that full-time doctoral candidates will devote time to their research that is similar to that of full-time employment. For the purposes of this regulation, this should comprise a minimum of 30 hours per week over a period of 12 months.

The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time if it is satisfied, after consultation with the Postgraduate Studies Committee, that the scholar is not following the approved programme of research and making satisfactory progress commensurate with the time required for completion of the degree, or is not otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship. Copies of the progress report normally submitted to the Postgraduate Studies Committee will be provided to the Scholarships office for consideration at the six-monthly and annual anniversaries of enrolment in the degree.

Application Deadline: 30/04/2010 31/10/2010 30 April and 31 October each year.
