Greece: Research Fellow position at the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry, the University of Crete

Overview

One new researcher position is available at the Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry, at the University of Crete, as part of the Regional Potential action 2008-1, “BIOSOLENUTI” Bioinspired Solar energy Utilization, funded by the European Commission.

Program Description

Bioinspired Synthetic Chemistry is at the heart of chemical sciences because it is the art of selectively making and breaking chemical bonds in a biomimetic way. It is for this reason that it has been a major topic in various fundamental research programs in the past, and also it has served as an important innovative technology in industry. The research efforts in the past decades generally resulted in incremental improvements, with occasional new reactions found by serendipity.

The BIOSOLENUTI Network plans to use Nature’s most powerful concept, evolution, as a source of inspiration to develop (r)evolutionary bioinspierd derivatives. The projects in Heraklion are centered around: synthesis of libraries of supramolecular ligands based on porphyrinic scaffolds, screening various types of hybrid materials for solar energy utilization. It is clear that researchers trained in the above manner and exposed to the new research concepts will tremendously increase their chance of employment in the European chemical or solar energy industry.

The position is for two years (324 months) and is open to national candidates as well as to candidates with nationality of either a Member or an Associated State of the European Union. The applicants must have acquired a University diploma giving access to doctoral studies in Chemistry in the Country where the diploma was earned (typically a PhD degree). So, new researchers with a Ph.D. degree, with more than 4 years of research activity, are eligible.

Benefits and How to apply

The salary is 2200 euro/month (gross, tax and social security will be deducted).
Those who wish to apply should submit their application letter via e-mail, along with a CV, two letters of recommendation, and a copy of their Master and/or PhD degree, to Prof. A. G. Coutsolelos (e-mail address: coutsole@chemistry.uoc.gr) who can also be contacted for informal enquiries. The ideal candidates will have a strong background in inorganic and/or organic chemistry with an interest in synthesis/catalysis, characterization of new hybid materials/derivatives via a wide range of spectroscopic/spectrometric methods and a good knowledge of the English language.

All applications should be received in Heraklion by May 10, 2010. In line with the Commission strategic approach of promoting equal opportunities and especially in view of the need to promote the participation of women in research, women are actively encouraged to apply. The selection process will be finished on May 30, 2010. The starting date of the fellowship is June 1, 2010 until May 30, 2011 with a renewal option for one more year (total period of two years).
